The Great Tang Dynasty, a heyday along the resplendent Chinese history, is also crowned as one of the super power of the contemporary world spanning the 6th to the 9th century. Chang’an (nowadays Xi’an City), the capital of the Tang Dynasty, is not only the political, economic and cultural hub of China, but also an well-reputed metropolis round the world and an important venues witnessing the neighborliness and harmony between the Chinese people with different nations; it is also noted as the starting point of the celebrated Silk Road – the bonds for international exchanges in culture, trade and politics in the ancient times.
The most magnificent building complex among the well-known “Three Biggest Imperial Palaces” within Chang’an city block, the Tang Daming Palace serves as a typical quintessence of the oriental garden architecture art and an important venue witnessing the neighborliness and harmony between the Chinese people with different nations, thus being reputed as an Oriental Holy Palace along the Silk Road. It has been the resort for emperors of the succeeding dynasties since Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty to administer the affairs of the State and the location for administration lasting for 200 years thereafter.
Daming Palace established from the eighth year of Zhenguan (634A.D.) till the third year of Longshuo (663A.D.), emerged to be a symbol of the supreme sovereignty and national might of the Great Tang Dynasty.
Occupying some 3.2 km2, Daming Palace Relics features terraced layout with the front of the complex contains offices and the back held residences. The central axis starts from Danfeng Gate at the south end and extends to Taiye Pool. The south part, centering around the middle court including Hanyuan Hall, Xuanzheng Hall, Zichen Hall, etc and internal court from south to north, is flanked by the Chancellery and the Imperial Secretariat, Institute for the Advancement of Literature and Exhibition Hall as well as over 20 buildings as halls, pavilions, temples, etc.
As the main hall of Daming Palace, Hanyuan Hall used to hold ceremonial and administrative events. The foundation of the hall was nearly 76m in length containing eleven rooms, and over 40m in width containing four rooms. The relics of the hall towers 15m, embodying fully the majestic scene of prosperity and harmony among people of different ethnics during the prime years. Taiye Pool was the center of the internal court in the north part, around which numerous buildings as Sanqing Hall were localed. Being over130m long and about 80m wide, Linde Hall in the west of the internal court used to hold banquets and receive foreign ambassadors. Its three halls in front, middle and back yards were interconnected and circled with corridors.
The grand and ingeniously-designed palace complex, a reflection of the flourishing economy, booming culture and advanced architectural skills, is regarded as the masterpiece of palace in ancient China. As a summary and improvement of the palace building techniques prior to the Tang Dynasty, Daming Palace has a tremendous influence on the architecture of the later generations and helps to shape the distinctive Tang architectural characteristics.
Daming Palace Relics site is a valuable cultural legacy bestowed by the history to our Chinese nations. In line with scientific attitude and methods and under the principles of respecting the history, the relics and the urban demand, as well as being responsible for the history, the project is a perfect integration between preservation of ancient cultural heritage and construction of ecological landscape, creating such a masterpiece conforming to the relic features and aesthetic beauty, accommodating citizens needs of recreation, residence and environment, and mirroring the international standards for improving the humanistic ambience and building up urban new districts.
